Who were the Nightsisters
To understand the true depth of the witches of Dhatomir beyond what standard galactic history records, you have to look into the forgotten archives, the ancient grimoires recovered by scholars like the Sith, and the dark corners of the EU lore.

Who was Mother Talzin?
Talzin was a scholar and practitioner of a mystical tradition that predated the strict dogmas of both the Jedi and the Sith. Her magick was not merely a localized parlor trick or simple green smoke, but a direct channel to an ancient spiritual pantheon known to the witches as the Winged Goddess and the Fanged God. Talzin’s spells relied on bridging the physical world with this unseen, mystical dimension, drawing power from forces that the modern galaxy had long since dismissed as myth.
Her ultimate conflict with Darth Sidious was also far more personal and historically rooted than the Clone Wars let on. Long before the galaxy knew of the Emperor's grand schemes, Sidious had traveled to Dathomir in secret, drawn by rumors of Talzin's unrivaled mastery over dark side alchemy. The two briefly forged a dark partnership, with Sidious promising to take her as his ultimate apprentice. That fragile alliance shattered forever when Sidious discovered that Talzin's infant child possessed immense raw potential, the boy who would become Darth Maul, and secretly stole the infant away in the night. The centuries-old grudge and the bitter rivalry that defined her final years were born from that original betrayal.
When General Grievous and his droid legions finally brought a scorched-earth purge to Dathomir under Sidious's orders, Talzin's physical form was destroyed. Yet, because her consciousness was tethered directly to the dark fabric of the ichor and her spiritual pantheon, she refused to simply vanish. She survived for a time as a living spirit of pure green mist, attempting to anchor herself back into the physical realm by possessing others and trying to leech the life essence from Count Dooku himself during the height of the Shadow Collective's wars.
That defiance ultimately brought down the wrath of the galaxy upon them. Terrified of Mother Talzin's burgeoning mystical might, Emperor Palpatine unleashed General Grievous and a droid armada in a brutal, scorched-earth purge designed to wipe the sisterhood from existence. Yet, the tragedy of Dathomir is that its magic is as stubborn as its people. Even after their strongholds were reduced to ash and bones, the coven refused to truly die. Scattered survivors carried the embers of their craft across the stars, hiding in forgotten galactic ruins or waiting centuries for the wheel of history to turn back in their favor.
And perhaps most astonishingly, the reach of these witches extends far beyond the borders of a single star system. Deep history reveals that the true roots of the Dathomirian matriarchy stretch across the intergalactic void itself. Long before hyperdrives existed, ancient space-faring mothers rode the colossal paths of the Purrgil across the endless dark, bridging two entirely separate galaxies with stone compasses and sheer willpower. They are survivors of worlds and eras forgotten by time, proving that no matter how many empires rise and fall with laser swords, the old, dark magic of the sisters will always endure.

Long before starships mapped the outer rim, a matriarchal sisterhood claimed the harsh, untamed wilderness of Dathomir. While the rest of the galaxy learned to view the universe through the sterile binary of the light and dark sides of the Force, these witches looked down into the deep, subterranean rifts of their world and found something entirely different: a thick, semi-sentient vapor they called ichor. To them, the Force was not a philosophy to be debated or a weapon to be swung, it was a living, breathing chemistry of the soul. They brewed it, weaponized it, and wove it into spells that could warp the minds of kings or shroud an assassin in absolute invisibility.
Their history is bound to a fierce, unrelenting independence that constantly put them on a collision course with the greater galaxy. They kept to themselves in sprawling stone fortresses, utilizing the male population of the planet, the fierce Nightbrothers like Savage Opress, as brute muscle, while the true power remained strictly in the hands of the coven and their leaders, like the legendary Mother Talzin. But living outside the rules of the Republic or the Sith did not mean they could be ignored.
